Editorial Photographers I Admire
Here is a short list of some great editorial photographers whose work I find very inspiring. I only included contemporary photographers, and this list does not cover pure photo journalists.
All these photographers make ingenious use of lighting to achieve their specific style.
- Chris Buck. An incredible pot of artistic creativity! The master of editorial portrait.
- Rankin. UK based portrait, fashion, and advertising photographer. His subject list includes everybody! Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Mick Jagger, you name it.
- Bruno Bisang. A Swiss specializing in erotic and beauty photography. One thing I particularly admire is his use of hard light for beauty portraits.
- Marco Grob. Swiss, great portraits. He was awarded the Hasselblad Masters Award in 2007. His website shows his stunning portfolio with portraits of Joe Cocker, Dave Gahan, Uma Thurman, David Lynch, Chuck Berry, Dieter Meyer of Yello, Pink and many others.
- Vera Hartmann. Another Swiss! She’s more on the journalistic side.
- Michael Muller. Impressive advertising photography.
- Baerbel Schmidt. She’s also a German, and like her colleague above she’s working internationally.
- Matthew Furman. American, like all following photographers. His lighting is beautiful and creates very intense portraits.
- Mike Powell. Very spectacular athletic scenes!
- Tim Tadder. Extremely spectacular sports with extensive postprocessing.
- Jill Greenberg. Her portraits show beautiful glamour lighting and meticulous postprocessing.
- Dustin Snipes. Sports action and those typical glorious American-style lighting portraits.
- David Drebin. Extroverted, strong colors, clear. Illustrates how much influence Edward Hopper had on American photographers (…see my previous post about Hopper).
