A Week’s Links
Another week’s links:
- Joni Sternbach: Surfers. Stunning 8×10″ tintype photographs.
- Dan Winters: Periodical Photographs (published by Aperture). A truely timeless book designed by Scott Dadich with so many careful details to discover.
- Irving Penn (1917-2009) was a student of Alexey Brodovitch, the legendary Art Director of Harper’s Bazaar where he initially worked as an illustrator. Later as a Vogue staff photographer under Art Director Alexander Liberman, Penn shot more than 150 covers.
Similar to his contemporary Richard Avedon (1923-2004), Penn used a simple seamless backdrop – not only for fashion but also for photos of tribal people in New Guinea. Being also a darkroom perfectionist, he reanimated the time-consuming process of platinum prints. Later his simple and elegant style resisted the sex-driven and provocant spirit of the late Sixties’ fashion photography depicted in Antonioni’s movie Blow Up and characterized by Helmut Newton (1920-2004).
His work is exhibited in LA’s Getty Center until January 2010, and in the National Portrait Gallery in London (opening in February 2010).
