Lausanne Half-Marathon
Yesterday I’ve run my first half-marathon in Lausanne at the lake Geneva. It’s a wonderful place with many villages on the course with famous names like Epesses and St. Saphorin well-known for their wine. Lake Geneva is also famous for the Montreux Jazz Festival and the song ‘Smoke on the Water‘ by Deep Purple (1972 [...]
Moving Mountain Landscapes
Still fascinated by time-lapse movies and their apparent manipulation of time… The full-HD version of this movie is at vimeo. I could use some time manipulation as well: tomorrow I’ll run the Lausanne half-marathon. Clouds from lumilon on Vimeo. Here are previous posts about how-to create time-lapse movies, and an earlier movie.
Compressing Movies for the Web
For high-definition HD video, the following settings are generally recommended: Size is 1280×720 (16:9). Compression is H.264 with frame rate 30 (or often 24), and frame reordering. Apple’s Quicktime exports movies compressed with H264 with a Gamma change resulting in color shifts. This topic has been extensively discussed in the Apple forums. There are two [...]
Creating Multimedia Slideshows
Slideshows are getting more and more popular for the presentation of photojournalistic work. The Washington Post started early to present photojournalistic essays on the web as slideshows. See the work of the Online Journalism Award winners here, for example ‘Bearing Witness‘ by Reuters. The Eddie Adams workshop is famous and has an impressive teaching faculty. [...]
Manipulating Time
Can we really manipulate time? Freeze it in a photograph? Let it elapse faster – or slower? Clouds from lumilon on Vimeo. My last post describes how to create time-lapse movies. Time-lapse photography speeds up time. The opposite is done with high-speed photography – slowing down time. Some great examples: One guy created a time-lapse [...]
Creating Time-lapse Movies
To create a time-lapse movie from a series of photos, consider the following points: Put the cam on a stable tripod. It’s not necessary to use the full resolution of the camera. Full high-definition (HD) video only has 1080 vertical pixels. For a typical 16:9 aspect ratio, use 1920 horizontal pixels. As an alternative, you [...]
The Running iPhone Photographer
The camera in the iPhone might not be the technically most impressing thing… However, it creates a lot of interesting effects like color shifts, distortion and slurring – it’s a bit lomo-like! The distortion is due to the slit scanning of the camera creating the long-feet effect in the photography below. The explanation is that not all areas [...]
Sunny Autumn Days
Another beautiful sunny autumn day. Intense colors as the sun is low, and the shadows long…
Simple Lighting
The simple things are best… this may apply for lighting as well. A simple lighting setup with a single light (Elinchrom softbox) and a diffuser (Lastolite TriGrip reflector) can be very effective.
More Running
Another runner photo for my portfolio… Simple lighting to create a late afternoon mood.
Saturday Football
Tonight I covered a local football game (european football, also called soccer). It was already quite cold although the sun came temporarly through. At least it was not raining! The shot below shows the only goal of the game. In addition to my main camera, I installed a remote wide-angle cam behind the goal. There [...]
Zurich’s Banks
A day in Zurich, Switzerland’s epicentrum of banks. Also in these days of global financial crisis, people won’t easily miss their usual golf play. However, many people are concerned about falling stock prices and economical slow-down. Banks like UBS are criticized for the salaries they pay to the top-level management. Some call it self-service.
A Stormy Run
For this shot I used a 24 mm wide-angle lens with a gradual neutral density filter for the sky. There were two lights on either side of the runner, the one on the right a bit nearer. The ambient was underexposed by about 2 values. Postprocessing in Photoshop with USM, desaturation, dodge&burn.
